Physical and Natural Characteristics

Geographical Location

     The municipality of Unisan is a coastal town in the southeastern part of the Bondoc Peninsula area. It is bounded by Atimonan on the North; by the Municipality of Gumaca on the East; by the Municipality of Pitogo on the South; and Tayabas on the West.

     It is geographically located on coordinate 13°50'N 121°59'E. It is approximately 57 kilometers from Capital City of Lucena and approximately 194 kilometers from the National Capital Region.

     Unisan is a 4th class municipality in the Province of Quezon Philippines. According to the PSA (2020), it has a population of 25,448.

Topographic Location

     Unisan's topography is a mix of low-lying lands (with elevations of 10 meters above sea level of less - see green portions of the map on the next page) near the coast and along the portion of Kalilayan river that empties into Tayabas Bay, gradually rising into undulating hills to the northeast and northwest, to a maximum height of 175 masl (525 ft) in Caigdal and a higher 198 masl (594 ft) up the uplands between Rizal Ilaya and Ibaba. Viewed from Tayabas, to South, Unisan appears like two mounds with the Kalilayan River in between, flowing out to the sea.

Climate/Rainfall

     Unisan has a pleasant climate neither too hot nor too cold, with dry months from December till May, and rainy from June till November each year.

Soils

     Its soil is Quinga silt loam, Bolinao clay loam, and Bantay clay, all characterized as "very good land" to "good land" suitable for cultivation. Quinga silt loam is well-drained soil, with medium texture, and occurs as deep to very deep soil suitable for diversified upland crops. Bolinao clay loam is well-drained, fine subsoil, also well-drained and occurs as deep soil. Bolinao clay loam and Bantay clay are suitable for upland fields, needing simple erosion control practices.

Population / Demography

     Based on the latest census of the population conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority on May 2020, the total population of Unisan is 25,448.

Population Distribution

     The total population of Unisan as of May 2020 which is 25,448 is distributed to 36 barangays of the Municipality. Four of these are considered the Poblacion area wherein 4,208 of the population live; thus, leaving the bulk of the population scattered in the rural barangays.

     The municipality has 11 coastal barangays including the población area. The most thickly populated barangays are F. de Jesus, Poctol, Kalilayan and Muliguin. These barangays have a population of more than 9,682 people.
